Ablyazov’s wife Alma Shalabayeva has applied to the Kazakhstan authorities asking for a permission to travel abroad, but was waved off for not providing a substantiation for the request, Tengrinews reports citing the official representative of Kazakhstan General Prosecutor’s Office Nurdaulet Suindikov. "As far as I know she and her lawyers filed a request asking the investigator to allow her to travel abroad. In her application Ms. Shalabayeva didn't specify any reasons, grounds or provide any materials substantiating her request. Once the materials and substantiations are provided, the investigator will review the request and issue a decision on it," Nurdaulet Suindikov said at the briefing in Astana, pointing out that the investigation into the case "on bribery for the purpose of obtaining a forged passport" in the name of Shalabeyva was not completed. "Her status is that of a Defendant in a Criminal Case. The final decision on her implication or not implication in the case has not been made, because this is a case over a passport forgery. The investigation needs to figure out whether the use of a consciously forged document took place. To my knowledge, the investigators have filed international investigation requests to several foreign countries. We will be able to proceed with the investigation once we receive their answers," the official representative of the General Prosecutor's Office said. On May 31 Alma Shalabayeva, 47, and her daughter Alua were deported by the Italian authorities for illegal stay in Italy with fake Central African passports and one and half months later the Italian authorities suddenly decided to reverse their deportation order. Her husband Mukhtar Ablyazov was arrested on an extradition request from Ukraine in the south of France near Cannes by French special forces on July 31. Ablyazov is wanted in Kazakhstan for embezzlement, fraud, money laundering and siphoning off billions of dollars of BTA bank's funds through dummy companies and illegal financial schemes. He may face 13-year of prison with confiscation of property in Kazakhstan. Shalabayeva is involved in the separate case on forgery of Kazakhstan passports by her husband’s relatives. One of those passports was issued to the name of Shalabayeva herself. She is currently under the recognizance not to leave Almaty. Meanwhile, Kazakhstan authorities say that Shalabayeva may be allowed to return to Italy or go to any other country if she applies to the Kazakhstan authorities with a request to travel, including abroad, on bail.
